Butler Community College honored Spirit AeroSystems with its inaugural Corporate Diversity Award at a breakfast ceremony today at the Hyatt Regency Wichita. Governor Sam Brownback presented Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. and the company’s president and CEO, Jeff Turner, with the award designed to honor excellence in workplace diversity and community inclusiveness.
“Spirit AeroSystems and Jeff Turner are very deserving recipients of this award, and are excellent examples for other businesses in our state,” said Governor Brownback. “I believe Kansans have special qualities that can give companies a competitive advantage. Companies like Spirit that utilize the diversity of each employee to grow their business, will make our state stronger.”
“I am honored to receive the first Corporate Diversity Award from Butler Community College on behalf of Spirit AeroSystems,” said Turner. “At Spirit AeroSystems we use diversity to drive business performance. We ask our entire organization to show dignity and respect for all, including those with different opinions and backgrounds. We strive to use all of the unique characteristics of our workforce to compete in this global environment and drive performance excellence.”
The Corporate Diversity Award is designed to honor a business or organization that has demonstrated exceptional leadership in valuing diversity in its workplace while also working to transform the broader community into an inclusive environment in which individuals are mobilized to share their unique and composite talents, perspectives and experiences to enact lasting solutions to long-standing community issues. This award is inspired by the mission of the Advance Kansas diversity leadership program, hosted by Butler Community College.
“Through Jeff’s visionary leadership, Spirit AeroSystems has led the way for other companies in our region to see diversity in a new light – as a solid business approach that enhances the bottom line,” said Butler President Jackie Vietti. “Butler Community College is delighted for this opportunity to personally recognize and thank Jeff for the difference he is making for his company, his employees and the citizens of South Central Kansas.”
Vietti believes Spirit’s engagement in and support of the Advance Kansas diversity leadership program has provided a strong foundation to ensure the continuation of the program, for both the well-being of local companies as well as our communities.
The Advance Kansas program brings together leaders from all demographic groups and across all sectors of society: business, education, religion, government, etc., to build leadership skills while also examining and pursing solutions to the challenges and opportunities most pressing in the community. These leaders then take the skills they learn back and use them in their own organizations as well as in the community at large; advancing all types of diversity issues.
