Class of 2012 takes the stage for graduation events

Butler Community College hosts its 85th Commencement this week to celebrate student achievement. Butler’s Spring 2012 commencement activities begin with the nurses pinning on Thursday and culminate with two commencement ceremonies on Saturday. A total of 1,033 students are candidates for graduation this year.

Thursday evening, Butler will recognize the 63 students completing Butler’s Nursing Program at a pinning ceremony, May 10 at 7 p.m in Butler’s 500 Building Gymnasium. Graduates will hear from guest speaker Patricia Hutchinson, retired Butler dean of nursing, allied health and early childhood education.  

Friday evening, Butler’s Order of the Purple Ceremony will focus on students graduating with a 3.75 GPA or higher and completing 30 or more hours in their time at Butler. This year, 127 students are eligible for this honor. Students maintaining a 4.0 GPA will be recognized as Order of the Gold during Commencement on Saturday. The Order of the Purple recognition ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., May 11 in Butler’s 500 Building Gymnasium. Butler 2012 Master Teacher Sonja Sommers-Milbourn will address this year’s Order of the Purple winners.

On Saturday, Butler’s 85th commencement ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., May 14 in the Butler Gymnasium. Sommers-Milbourn will also give the commencement address. Also presented will be Butler’s highest scholarship, the Hubbard Award. 

In addition to degree-earning students, 60 others will complete special certifications in the college’s various technical programs.
