Butler Community College hosts its 84th Commencement this week to celebrate student achievement. Butler’s 2011 commencement activities begin with the nurses pinning on Thursday and culminate with two commencement ceremonies on Saturday. A total of 1,043 students are candidates for graduation this year, up from approximately 960 candidates last year.
Thursday evening, Butler will recognize the 68 students completing Butler’s Nursing Program at a pinning ceremony, May 12 at 7 p.m in Butler’s 500 Building Gymnasium. Graduates will hear from guest speaker Don Hauschild, a previous Butler Nursing grad.
Friday evening, Butler’s Order of the Purple Ceremony will focus on students graduating with a 3.75 GPA or higher and completing 30 or more hours in their time at Butler. This year, 125 students are eligible for this honor. Students maintaining a 4.0 GPA will be recognized as Order of the Gold during Commencement. The recognition ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., May 13 in Butler’s 500 Building Gymnasium. Butler 2011 Master Teacher Nita Jackson will address this year’s Order of the Purple winners.
On Saturday, Butler’s eighty-fourth commencement ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., May 14 in the Butler Gymnasium. Butler alumna and Vice President at Cessna Aircraft Company Teresa Kirkendoll will give the 2010-11 commencement address. Also presented will be Butler’s highest scholarship, the Hubbard Award.
